[TheForge] leaf spring for hammer

Hi all,
     Got a heating question.  I am putting together the toggle arm for my junk yard power hammer and I am using an old car leaf spring for the spring which holds the hammer.  I need to bend it into a U shape and still maintain its "springy " qualities.  I have a small forge. Any suggestions? How much annealing should I plan on doing.
