Thanks again Bruce,  I am sure that in time this will work out for me.  What started the thread was that I had forged out a guard for a sword, which as I was drawing it out, I realized that even though I had measured the stock carefully before starting, it appeared that I had more material on one side that the other.  Not sure where I messed up, but having more is always better than having not
enough and I was able to grind away the excess to achieve a symmetrical appearance that was desired.  Thanks for the help,
