It has been my impression from the homework I have done and what powder
coaters have told me that a colored powder coat can keep U V rays out but that
a clear will not. If it is an outdoor application it will breakdown and
look like hell in time, yes it will last longer than any wax or polyurethane,
or lacquer, but eventually the UV rays will break it down. This is just
what I have been told and I did not read it in the bible. If I was sold on
doing it I would contact the company that manufactures the powder coatings
themselves. When I talked to the powder coaters I soon realized there was a
fair number of them who bought the equipment, went into business and didn't
really know that much beyond how to do it, and very little about clear coat
on iron or steel.
