In every hospital around here there is a sign in the entrance stating that the hospital can not refuse treatment do to lack of ability to pay, if it is an emergency. The county hospital is obliged to take you no matter what. Now, they may bankrupt you
later trying to get payment, but nobody should lie bleeding in the street, or cough up a lung waiting for treatment.
Part of the problem is that the number of things which we now attempt to treat has grown exponentially in our lifetimes. Even in the fifties folks just gave up the ghost if they got too sick. Now the "treatment" extends to levels unthought of then.

The system is still broken for other reasons. They used to ask have you seen a doctor in the last ten years. Now it is have you seen one EVER. Answer? "No I am fifty one and have never seen a doctor. Does that make me a good risk?".

Twelve years ago my son had trouble breathing. The emergency room doc wrote asthmatic attack. No problem or treatment since then. The CYA insurance companies still do not want to cover him for "any disease or condition of the respiratory or digestive
or reproductive systems" Essentially all he has is insurance against broken legs, provided he didn't stumble while coughing.

Smithing content is in the new header,
