I have an auger type that I think is quite elegant: rodewood handle,
brass ceter ferrule to hold the shank of the screw.  Thing is, I can't
figure out how it was made.  Shank is a tad under 1/4", the auger part
11/32".  Kinda looks like it may have been ground from a sort of
cattail-shaped blank.

Looks rather like a brace bit except:  the tip is just a sharp point,
not threaded; and of course there are no circle-cutter knives.  Works
great.  Got it is a junk shop years ago.
