[TheForge] I think I found my cad

I have used TurboCad 3.0 extensively. I just uprgaded to version 8 but haven't
started using it yet. I have found that drawing something up and dimensioning
it in a CAD program greatly increases my productivity in the shop. I have had
relativley simple projects take me weeks as I measured/designed each component
as I went whereas complex projects took me a couple of days when I took the time
to draw it up ahead of time. I just built a scale model T fireengine for a
parade in a few days only because I took the time to do the drawings at night,
built during the day. Using CAD, I started with cut list, knew the precise
angles etc. All of my time in the shop was spent cutting, bending and welding,
not scratching my head. It was this project that motivated me to upgrade my
CAD. I believe that the free 2D version of TurboCad on the web site is verion
3.0. It was designed for older machines ( they were top end then) I would
highly recomend the free TurboCad since it provides you with an upgrade path if
you really like it. Version 7 non-professional edition can be had for $65 at
CompUSA. You can upgrade to version 8 professional edition for $149. I really
like the ability to generate photorealistic images of the mechanisms I design.
I also ordered Animation Lab that works with TurboCad to produce gif or mpg
animations of your design.
