Well...I once gave a groom a gunstock warclub as a wedding gift, and he 
promptly gave it to his wife...

A pair of knives, often decorated (ivory and ebony handles if you could 
afford such), would often be presented to the bride at many weddings in 
Europe in the 16th and 17th century.  

Ahem...I'm getting married this summer....my bride could use some 
blades...just a hint ;-)

<< Also, is giving a knife for a wedding gift asking for trouble if the "happy
 couple" have their first fight at the reception?   8^)
