Yes, that is the way I heard it also, have to have a penney for each knife.
Had one cousin give an entire knife set with steak knives in it. Wonder
what he was trying to say?

I second the 'Yea' to a good knife being an excellent wedding pressy!
However, tradition says that you shouldn't give knives as gifts (bad luck
thingy), so one always includes a coin, with which the recipient 'buys' the
knife(was a penny, but I'm not sure now, what with inflation and all...).
Anyone else heard of this?
