Discarded refrigerators work well, too. I've got a full-size one that I use
for that reason (free from the want ads), but dorm-sized ones might be easy
to find on the side of the road in a college town in May.
The full-sized ones have the advantage of needing only the switch bypassed to
leave the light on full-time. Don't know if any dorm-fridges have lights.
I also keep my cordless tool batteries in there. Batteries don't like the
cold very much.
