I'm retrofitting my 8050A that has a dying LCD with an LED display. I'm using some older HP displays that have built-in decoders (a combination of 5082-7300 and 5082-7304 displays). These are fairly power-hungry displays (currently running about 250mA for the five chips) and I am going to incorporate an auxiliary 5V power supply to feed them.
While I could go with a traditional transformer/bridge/filter/regulator, it would be so much simpler to use a small switching power supply (and I think it would also be a bit more efficient, less heat, etc.).
Is there much risk with RF noise getting into the uProcessor and associated circuitry if I do use a switcher? I'm currently using a USB wall charger and that works fine but the supply itself is somewhat removed from the rest of the components so that could still be a factor.
Yes, I know there are solutions out there that use standard seven-segment displays, etc., but I've started down this road and plan to stick with it (I just happen to really like the dot-matrix-ish look of these little displays).
Should I be concerned about using a switcher here?
Thanks,
