There is a lot to recommend common base level shifters:

- High output impedance makes them short circuit proof.
- Common base operation isolates the input from the output making them
more stable and less likely to oscillate.
- Common base operation eliminates the effects of Miller capacitance
increasing high frequency gain.

The common two transistor differential amplifier/comparator
configuration can be considered an emitter follower driving a common
base level shifter . . .
