[Test-Equipment] Spectrum Analyzer

Most important is to have some good attenuators.
These are to protect the mixer input. It should never exceed 100mW or 100 VDC.
However, things are not always what they seem. A 10 dB broad band attenuator on the
input could save your spectrum analyzer in case of a dropped cable that falls where it
shouldn't or connected to the wrong device. 20 dB even better. Until you get very used
to using it. An attenuator is also good idea when connecting to an outdoor antenna.
While disconnected it may obtain a good charge of electricity on the feed line. That
discharging directly into the analyzer could bad. A smoked
attenuator is better than a fried mixer.
If you are going to check a transceiver, don't trust that you have the power setting right.
Have lots of attenuation between the transceiver and your spectrum analyzer. A directional
coupler or capacitive pick-off will serve this purpose.

Subject: [Test-Equipment] Spectrum Analyzer

Hey All,
I have just acquired a Tektronix 2712 and have not owned
an SA up to now. My question is this what precautions / equipment do
you all take to protect your analyzers? Also, what tools do you use to
assist you in using the SA and the sources for those tools. The follow
up question is this : What tips and tricks would you all like to share
with a new owner? My initial primary uses will be making NRSC
measurements and receiver tuning. I am also open to finding new (and
cool) uses for it as well.

Thank you in advance for your responses.

Regards,
Brian
