[Test-Equipment] tube tester problem

Dale, thanks for the excellent suggestions. I bought the 83 from ESRC in Florida. It has what appears to be specks of mercury on the globe. It is made by RCA and had the numbers 54E or S4E on the base. I suppose it is NOS since that is what ESRC usually sells. I can't find the original 83 because it is hopefully temporarily misplaced.
The two pilots are replaced with 55 lamps and appear to be of China manufacture.
I have checked the electrolytic caps for correct installation as to polarity. I did not replace the caps with exact values stated in the manual.
I also check for proper wiring of the meter polarity. The leads are too short to hook up in reverse.
It is a beautiful tube tester and as a boatanchor (hundreds) accumulator, it is a valuable thing to have. It was working better before "I FIXED IT". Thanks John, K5PGW

Are you sure it is the correct rectifier, i.e. an 83 mercury-vapor rectifier, and not something like an 83-v which is not mercury-vapor? You said that the tubes are new, but are they old American-made stock or are they recent imports which may not be the actual tubes that they are marked as? Are both of the panel lamps old-stock type 55, and not some newer "55" from China? Did you check all of the internal settings shown in the "Service Information" section of the manual?
