[Test-Equipment] xtal tester

A simple single transistor oscillator from the handbook where the crystal is connected between emitter and collector and base is at RF ground.
A tank circuit in the collector tuned to the expected frequency will assure it oscillates in the proper fundamental or overtone mode. The crystal
should oscillate in series resonance mode. This mode the crystal frequency is independent of loading capacitance. It is the natural mechanical
resonance of the quartz slab. This type of oscillator was often used in VHF converters since they operated in overtone mode and the loading
capacitance would vary with the transistor's temperature thus producing drift.

Thank yuo Eric,
I know the frequencies of the crystals, I just want to know if they
oscilate.

Keep in mind that a given crystal may oscillate at a frequency quite
different from its intended frequency when operated in a circuit with the
wrong load and drive level.

Some grid dip meters can also excite HF xtals simply by plugging it into the
coil socket (FT243 holders seem to fit perfectly).
Not sure how one would connect a counter directly, but tuning in the signal
on a receiver and zero-beating it with a counter-equipped sig gen might
work.
