Keeping batteries in the freezer is an excellent idea, because it does make a
difference. Keep fresh batteries at room temperature and they will eventually
deplete on their own. But, keep them in a freezer (say, 15F-18F) and they will
last practically forever.
As to whether to replace batteries at regular intervals vs. only when after
die, it's a question of whether (and how much) one is willing to pay for a
minorconvenience (my choice -- not a red penny).
