[Test-Equipment] VOM Batteries that don't leak?

I agree, but the batteries that were worst were also sitting about with no load. I'm hoping experience has shown certain brands are better choices for forgetful folks like me who leave them in longer than we ought to.

Wayne,

I think the Radio Shack batteries lasted as long as they did simply because
they had zero load during storage. The batteries (cells, actually) that
leak very often have a very low but continuous load on them, such as a
clock, or a portable radio that has an internal time chip. The best
insurance is to replace batteries on a calendar basis, and to remove
batteries from devices being stored for more than a few weeks.

I've been replacing several VOM & VTVM batteries this week and found some
that were trying to consume themselves. But to my surprise, one of the old
batteries was a Radio Shack Enercell dated 1999 that not only showed no sign
of leakage but still measured 1.55 volts.

So, I said to myself, "Self! Go tomorrow and buy more Radio Shack Enercell
Extra Life batteries with the 'Miracle Seal.' (Miracle Seal is printed right
on the battery.) But guess what? I look online indicates they don't sell
them anymore!

So my question is whether any of you have recommendations for A, C and
9-volt batteries that have a good reputation of not making a big mess when
they have been left in place past the expiration date?

Thanks & 73,
