I think I can turn up something. I'm off to bed, but I just did a bit of Googling, and I think the info about roll-your-own 774s is from an at least two-part article by John Nagle that began in the July, 1978 issue of CQ, entitled (if I read the snippet correctly) "The General Radio 821 R.F. Admittance Bridge (A Poor Man's Q-Meter)." If anyone has CQ from that time I would love to get a scan of all of the parts of that article.
