This has a photo of the 774 fittings for the probe.  The 774 could use a banana plug on the male side and also had a screw-in female adaptor.
     The IET labs site has a complete collection of the 
"General Radio Experimenter"    I have not searched them to see if there was an article on the 774 connector but there certainly is on the 874.  The 874 is hermaphroditic, that is, any two connectors will mate while the 774 was a conventional male-female type.
