Glenn,

I'm not familiar with Metcal.  I use an older Pace solder-desolder station 
Model PPS-5 with Pace or APE (Automated Production Equipment) desoldering 
handpiece and weller irons.  Works well for boatanchors and simple circuit 
boards (if I ever have to do one again).  If you prefer a gun-type handpiece, 
there is Hakko.  A good gun-type soldering iron is sold by Sears.  Pistol 
grip but with pyramid end soldering iron type tip.  Can't recall who actually 
makes it right now but it begins with "W" and isn't Weller.  Useful for 
medium weight work not requiring a really large iron.
