Which model? Mine is a 544-B, with the 544-P3 power supply. That 
supply can be set up for 500 or 100 volts (you have to open up the 
case to change the shorting links).The manual explains how to adjust 
the 500 volt supply for as little as 200 volts. With a little work 
you should be able to substitute an external supply of no more than 
500 volts (the limit is the bridge dissipation) leaving the internal 
supply to power the detector.
