One use would be in a HP amplifier in series with a grid, control or screen
with a 1 or 5 k Ohm pot across it to adjust the sensitivity.
The contacts would press the [off] button on the hV power supply control system.
The control would be set with a load resistor and a miliAmmeter in series across
the tube elements.
Excessive grid current would kill the hV power supply if sunk or emitted.
