Dennis,
Although many folks use the term "Variac" as a generic title of any variable
autotransformer, it actually is a trademark of General Radio. The similar
product made by Superior Electric is called a "Powerstat."
Your Powerstat is an autotransformer with a variable tap. The 120 VAC input
is connected across the entire winding, and the output is taken between the
tap wiper and the low end of the winding. It is very important that you
connect the 120 VAC input so that the "hot" wire goes to the top of the
winding, and the "neutral" wire goes to the bottom of the winding- the same
end that is common with the output circuit. You should use a three-wire
cord with a grounding plug, and connect the green grounding wire to the
metal frame of the Powerstat. It is also very important to recognize that
any variable autotransformer does not isolate the output from the input, so
there is always a shock hazard when using such a device.
You can download the Powerstat catalog here, for more information and
terminal connections:

You may find that the model number is covered by tape. Judging from its
appearance, I'd guess that it is rated between 10 and 20 amperes.

Subject: [Test-Equipment] Help identifying Old Superior Electric Variac
Good afternoon all,
I've been moving around this old Superior Electric variac for
years, partly because I have no information on it.
Could you guys/gals take a look at it here:
http://tinyurl.com/variac
and tell me what you might know or reasonably assume about
it, in particular:
How to hook it up.
Possible current rating range.
Age.
or whatever you might be able to share about it. I've had
it for close to 20 years.
Thanks!
Dennis
