I find that friends to whom I give my personal e-mail address are 
very quick to enter my address into one of those "send this item to a 
friend" web page when they find some cute item they want me to see. I 
try to educate them to simply copy the URL and send it to me in a 
private e-mail but to no avail, human nature being what it is...

I think that's how private addresses get into the hands of spammers.
