The purpose of the filter was to separate the tone
modulation used for the A/N guide from any voice
transmission. The airways beacons also frequently had
weather information on them via voice. The filter allowed
selection of either voice or tone or both.
I am not sure when the range beacons were discontinued
in favor of much more sophisticated methods but they were in
use for probably thirty years. The filters had nice toroid
inductors in them which could be used for other things like
RTTY filters.
