If you can find an HP8601A sweeper I think you will find that it has an ideal frequency range for checking both the IF and the front end of boatanchors, I believe it covers from about 100KHz to 110MHz in 2 ranges, of course you get the excellent quality that comes with HP gear. The 8601A probably goes back to the 1970s so be careful what you buy, they may need work. There are probably more modern units out there I'm sure others will have suggestions.

alignment of some boatanchor IF and filters using a scope.
