    One of the most efffective ways of protecting against 
line surges is to use a constant voltage transformer of the 
Sola type. They will also avoid the high line voltage 
conditions found in many areas.

They also often up surplus but beware that the capacitors 
may be bad in used ones. Can be fixed but always measure the 
output voltage of a used Sola before using it.
