Neat story, Bob - Reminds me of PM (Percussive Modulation) - I've not 
tried that but I do apply Percussive Repair methods at times!  About 
that same timeframe, my old Model 80 was put to a similar task.  A buddy 
of mine just went nuts when people kerchunked his repeater, so when  I 
wanted to annoy him I'd just dial the attenuator up to the point where 
it would tickle the squelch, and mother nature would take care of the rest.

I love my synthesized stuff, but there's something to be said for analog 
attenuators.   All I know is it came from Collins Radio surplus so it's 
got to be good ;-)
