I find I have to agree 100% with Bill on this one. I've been beavering away
mostly on test equipment restoration the last 8 years or so in my small
hobby room. And I find the one item I have not yet worked out is the
"permanent" workbench. Parts bins, tool kits, cable racks, equipment carts
and storage racks came naturally enough. But the ultimate workbench design
has eluded me. I now realize its because I kept trying to come up with a
fixed location bench that could hold about any project and equipment stack I
could ever need. The reality is as Bill has described. My workbench proper
is about the size of a dining room table, and actually holds not that much
equipment at any one time. The "next gen" is looking suspiciously similar
but with wheels to allow moving it around. I also whole heartedly agree one
tends to have 2 to 6 pieces of gear "in process" at any one time. Sometimes
you're hung up for weeks while looking for parts. Other times the mime
favours a different piece of gear, exercising a different skill.

...is easier to bring the workbench to the project. Accordingly, we have
storage shelves to
hold test equipment and roll-around carts with open table surfaces which are
used to carry a test setup. Needed equipment can be set up on the carts and
brought to the equipment location....
The concept extends to the notion that a project may not be completed in one
session....Tools are returned to portable tool boxes. All project screws
and small parts are placed in plastic sandwich bags and stored....
...allows better work on the inevitable second project that comes along and
pushes the first project out of the way. Also, more work space is available
since unneeded test equipment is not crowding
the test bench. Our test benches need to be nothing more than open tables.
