I have discussed this with an acquaintance who does such repair (not an HP
employee now). He stated that the easy way to open the module is to remove
the module and them place it on a heat controlled hot plate. Gradually bring
the temperatur up so that the entire module is warmed to the same
temperature. When you reach a particular themperature the lid will be
"easily" removed. [I do not remember the exact temperature he said was
necessary, but could ask him if required]. 

I did not discuss whether or not replacement of the actual diode was
'challenging' nor whether exact replacements were required or alternate
diodes were satisfactory.
