I would say "take what you can get." The serial numbers covered by a given
manual are usually listed in the front, but again, it isn't going to make a
whole lot of difference in the case of either the 851B or the 8551B.
All other things being equal, a later manual is better than an earlier one.
In the edition of the 851B manual I had, the instructions for aligning the
crystal filters were downright impenetrable in certain places. Maybe they
improved the procedure over time.
