Second Chance Offer Item : 3820830518Watch out, folks, this is a new one, at
least on me. Forged "second-chance offers" sent to runner-up bidders on
high-$ auctions.
These are particularly insidious because they actually do come from eBay's
mail server via the "Contact Member" button. Now that eBay has made it
impossible for users to query email addresses associated with seller
accounts and vice-versa, there are few intrinsic clues that the message is
not legitimate.
If (a) I hadn't already corresponded with this seller and realized that
kajaebay at yahoo.com is not her email address; and (b) the scammer had better
grammatical skills than the average US public-school graduate, I might have
fallen for this one myself. :-( By targetting runner-up bidders, this scam
technique is good at robbing potentially-desperate "marks" who may be too
happy at receiving a second-chance offer to ask questions.
It looks like eBay needs to disallow subject-line editing on their "Contact
Member" forms.
