My "ol' rule" is err on the side of slow (accurate data vs quick check),
have the desired signal take up 1/4-1/2 of the screen width, and use the
"peak detect" function. Some SA scans, I don't want to wait on. Guess
that's not very technical.

While we are babbling on about spectrum analyzers, how about a tutorial
on sweep speed. This is the most miss used and poorly understood part of
the utilization of analyzers for measurements.
