[Test-Equipment] help for a scope dope

Ok folks, I am now forced to bare my soul. The last time I used a
scope (and I use the term very loosely) was in the early 60's using a
trusty Navy OS-8 with the 3 in. CRT. Fast forward to 2004......I just
acquired a 4-chan 300 MHZ analog TEK. I know, I know, my
troubleshooting over these many years would have been soooo much
easier with even a mediocre scope of modern design but my excuse was
always "I cannot afford one of those things" when actually the truth
was I was so ashamed of my ignorance considering my having an FCC
First Phone and years of electronics. Also, I always got by with my
better than average troubleshooting skills so I said "who needs one."
This thing looks so complicated with all the knobs and switches, as
well as the hype that goes along with a top quality piece of
sophisticated test equipment.
I understand the basics of scope design but have no clue where to
begin my path to higher practical knowledge. Within the past several
months I am sure I saw an ad in QST or CQ for a how-to on scopes in
VHS format but can't even find that now. Please give me some tips from
your vast experiences.
