Carl, your 8443 and 8553 should work together. Some very early models of the RF plug-in
were missing one of the coax connections to the cannon connector from the IF section. It
can be added; details in the manual. If you are seeing broadband noise at the output,
then it's got a problem (the 8443A, that is). It's relatively easy to sort out, if you have
the manual. It has the same rather easy to burn out attenuators as the 8640B, but it's
less likely that it will have been plugged into a transmitter. Look first at the output
amplifier, and work back from there.
The 8444 is designed to work with the 8554 and to some extent with the 8555 plug-ins, it
will not work with the 8553, the IFs are different. Could the 8553L that you mention
actually be an 8554L?
