To all who responded to my request for a suitable substitute - many thanks. >From the circuit diagram and comments received, it was fairly clear that the device is a power PNP driver, which probably is not very critical in terms of parameters. I replaced it with a BD238 and the power suply has been running flawlessly ever since. Thanks again, Chris
