[TenTec] 1254 receiver sensitivity

Hello Al,

Without digging thru all my Ten-Tec stuff, I THINK this is that
synthesized receiver they offered as a kit. I never built one, but if it has any of
those small shielded "binocular" transformers in it (like some of their
bigger receivers), I've fixed at least a couple of their more elaborate
receivers that had sensitivity problems caused by these parts (very small
transformers covered with a metal shield can........they have large holes, and
the transformers are plainly visible). On both receivers, the sensitivity
was down 20-30 dB, and in both instances I could get the sensitivity to
abruptly improve if I gently tapped the subject circuit board. Turned out
that there was a small nick in the insulation of the enameled copper wire
that one of these transformers were wound with, and it was pretty easy to
isolate which transformer was flaky (there were several on the board) and was
causing the problem. I could take a plastic rod, and simply touch it to
the transformers' cores, or gently tap and press the cores back and forth,
and easily pin down the one that was causing the problem. It was a fairly
easy fix.........I simply removed the shield, bent it outward slightly,
and re-installed it, so that it didn't touch any of the small enameled
wire.........not as involved as removing/re-winding the transformer, but it
seemed to take care of the problem.

Hi,
I know this list is practically non-existent, but maybe some folks are
still getting it (I hope). (I've been subscribed to this list for 6-8
yrs, haven't seen anything lately, thought it was defunct.)
I'm trying to get a 1254 all band rcvr going for a local octogenarian.
He bought it some yrs ago built, says it did work well, but quit.
It works, sort of, it's very insensitive. Will hear a 50uv signal but
not 1uv. Does know that WWV is there at 10mc, but not strong enuf to
hear the audio.
I rebooted the microprocessor, it might have gotten marginally better.
I know they weren't known for super sensitivity, but this one's pretty
hard of hearing.
Any tips for us?
tnx, 73,

Al, W8UT
