[TenTec] Triton IV questions

John.
I had a Triton IV (540) with outboard digital dial and 262G power supply.
This replaced the Drake R4A and T4X that I had for over a dozen years. I
did keep the Drake gear as at that time the value was very low.
As far as the Triton is concerned...
Pretty good 100 watt transceiver but lacking bells and whistles of todays
transceivers. If you were a CW op maybe it was a step up but SSB was a
after thought. No VOX except the outboard circuit in the 262G power supply.
The Ten Tec power supplies were cheap units (17 or 18A with maybe 20A surge)
so they were marginal.
The Trion covers 80 to 10 with no 160 or WARC. Once I got the FT-980 and a
back up IC-740 the Triton was sold. The guy did not want the supply so I
kept that to power a 25W 2 meter and 80 watt brick.
I used my Drake R4A as an outboard RX and won the 1979 CQ WW 40 SSB USA
Single band with it driving a Henry 3K at N4RJ(using K4JRB) as he was as VP2
with the rest of the SEDXC setting a record that stood for years. Receiver
worked OK but the Drake with the built in filters was much better.
The so called 1Khz readout was as least as good as the Drake line before the
C model. I had the transceiver for about 8 years with absolutely no
problems. The IC-740 with built in power supply is priced about the same as
the Triton digital and power supply and I think is better because 160 and
WARC band coverage and digital readout. The 740 has been to the caribbean
and VL9 Christmas Is as a back up rig. W5KNE says once he got to VK9X that
he found the 740 was as good as his main transceiver. At C6A it became the
main 10 meter station one year
(they have 100 watt limit there).
But the Triton was good gear for the 1975 time frame and Ten Tec will still
maintain it!

Subject: [TenTec] Triton IV questions
Found what appears to be a good deal on a Triton IV digital model and PS. I
am trying to find out the size of this radio. Can anyone help me with that?
And does anyone have any opinions, good or bad, about these rigs? Never
owned a Ten Tec before.
