[TenTec] I am at the end of my rope. Can't seem to findanexplanation for why I can only

Dan,

Dave is right on the money. The fall back SWR protection is a common
problem in all Ten-Tec rigs. Had the same prob with my Corsair. I
always use Amphenol PL-259's (the expensive ones with the heavy
Nickel plating and Silver tips), and Belden RG-8X. Another manufacturer
of preasembled RG-8X cables with Silver and Gold plated PL-259's
will tell you that Silver Oxide is not a problem as it is conductive. Well,
any oxide acts like an insulator to some extent and has some contact
resistance. The DC resistance on your coax using a DVM is one thing, but the
RF resistance at HF is a completely different story.

Dan,

It sounds like the internal "fall back" SWR protection circuit in the OMNI
is sensing a different SWR between the two set ups and is throtteling back
the power to adjust for the higher SWR. I would try to get hold of a "known"
quality BIRD type dummy load and BIRD wattmeter, check all of the coax's you
are using between the dummy load, SWR/Wattmeter and rig, ie: NO RG-58 or 59
, use RG-8X of a known quality (none of these chinese pre-made connectors,
etc) at a minimum or good RG-8/U, etc and I'll bet you will find the
problem.

On the other hand, there is virtually NO difference between 80 watts output
vs 100 watts output, so perhaps you might just want to forget about the
issue and enjoy operating (hi hi).

Good luck & 73,
