Hello Meir,
Welcome to the group. I have not been a member to long myself but it seems
like a good group. I started my Ten-Tec association years back with a
Century
21 and then went on to Kenwood and Yaesu. Now it seems I'm making the
full circle.
I bought a Corsair at a Hamfest thinking I would play around with it and
then sell
it. It turns out I really like the audio from the rig and am now looking at
getting
an Omni or maybe the Orion if I win the lottery hi.
Anyway Welcome! Hope to hear you on the bands sometime.
73, Jeff N0OST

Subject: [TenTec] New Omni VI owner and new to this list
Hello Group,
I just joined this mailing list, as a new Ten-Tec owner. I just purchased an
Omni VI with factory option 3, with all optional filters.
I decided to buy the Omni VI as a replacement for my Icom 756 (original,
non-Pro) model, which in turn replaced my old Icom 740 about a year and a
half ago.
I liked the 740, as its a ham band only transceiver with no general
coverage receiver - I prefer ham band only coverage anyway, but I gave in at
a weak moment to an almost unused 756 for a price I couldn'tt resist
Unfortunately I sold the 740, so there was no way to go back. The 756
obviously has a much higher phase noise than the 740, as weak signal
performance is not good at all. Im also a boatanchor collector and user
so I could compare the 756 to older receivers. Under marginal conditions, (I
mainly operate CW, with a little SSB thrown in occasionally, and a fair
amount of AM with boatanchor and vintage military gear which I use on CW
as well) I can dig out a weak CW signal better with older tube gear than
with the 756.
I researched phase noise and front end performance of modern transceivers,
and as most of you may well know, the two winners in this department are the
Elecraft K2 and the Omni VI. As Im up to my ears with boatanchor
restoration projects, I haven't considered the K2 as I have no idea how much
time I can devote to building it because I dont want to neglect my other
projects, so I needed immediate satisfaction, and found an Omni VI with
factory installed Option 3, and populated with all the filters.
I just compared the 756 and the Omni VI side by side, and in weak-signal CW,
noise level and effective PBT it beat the 756 hands down.
Any remarks and observations are welcome and if this group is as helpful,
resourceful and knowledgeable as mailing list members usually are, I know I
ll have a great time on the list.
Thanks,
73, Meir WF2U
