[TenTec] INRAD First IF Filters

To all that have responded to my quest for knowledge regarding the INRAD
filters:

I had some time on Friday PM to really get into a good A-B comparison
with the first IF filters. (Not much other time over the weekend since
#1 son became a proud father of his first child early Sunday AM)

1) When filters were reversed, i.e., Stock TT 2.4 in main slot and INRAD
in narrow, I noticed an increase in S meter sensitivity by about 1-2 s
units when narrow button depressed. What!! Was the TT filter that
lossey? No, read on.
2)Decided to get the xyl's ears to help in doing A/B test. Had the rig
on its side and started substituting both stock TT 2.4 and INRAD 2.8 in
the main slot and noting the S-meter and audio quality. Well, after
several swaps, (and pins were self-cleaned a little........??!!!....Ah
Hah!) I can say 3 things. one, rig is quieter with the INRAD; two,
receive audio is more pleasant, but not by much and three, S-meter reads
about 1 S-unit better with the INRAD in the main slot. It would appear
it is a more efficient/effective filter.
3) Now for the narrow position. I remembered another list member who
commented that his radio came alive when he deoxited and cleaned a
number of contacts on various boards. I noticed that when the TT 2.4
was inserted and re-inserted several times and the narrow button was
depressed, it started working better(i.e., improved S-meter readings in
narrow, or, just starting to work as it should). I then got the deoxit
dropper out and commenced cleaning contacts. (That was my problem in
the first place!!)

I now can say without a doubt the INRAD 2.8 in the main first IF slot
does in fact improve the receive audio, reduces noise and is more
selective/sensitive in my TT OMNI V. It is a KEEPER. I also can
strongly recommend to all that after a rig like these older TT's gets a
little age on it, get out your deoxit dropper and clean all the
contacts, especially the filters.

A few of you have suggested running the second IF wide open for
additional improvement. Well, I may try that later, but now I am
thinking about ordering another INRAD 2.8 for the second IF to do the
same kind of listening test.

Thanks to all for your comments and support. I believe anyone out there
with a corsair or corsair II should also consider these filters. If I
still had my corsair, I know what I would do!!

Best wishes to all,
David Drake, Wd9cmd
