[TenTec] Orion

I have had the 340 for about six months. It is the best AM receiver of all
my radios which includes 756ProII, 775DSP, Palstar R30C, Drake R8. On SSB,
it is second place to my K2(s). The selectivity on the K2 has yet to be
beaten by any radio in this shack so far.
My BIG gripe with the Ten Tec (and the digital radios) is a definite chunky
sound when tuning through strong AM signals. It matters not what step you
are in, 1hz or 10KHz, about every 50KHz I get a distinct and distracting
'snap, snap snap' and the VFO steps through the signal. I'm not sure why the
'clicking and snapping' is most prominent about every 50KHz. I called Ten
Tec on this and they admit their radios do it too...but in the end, no cure
was offered other than that is appears to be normal for digital rigs. Ten
Tec was attentive to my concerns and I have NO problem with service or
sales. They are first rate, that's for sure. However, that digital click I
hear on AM mode is, for me, bothersome. I was hoping the Ten Tec RX-340
wouldn't show this trait. The R30C does, as well as my Drake and to a lesser
extent the Icoms on AM...
Other than that, you'll think you're in heaven with the '340. Take it one
step further and get yourself the Sherwood Engineering SE-3 Synchronous
Detector is you plan on ANY AM shortwave listening. It connects directly
into the IF and produces and much better sounding radio than the stock '340
and beats the stock S.A.M synchro in the Ten Tec hands down. The stock
S.A.M. will EASILY lose lock, even in the most recent firmware upgrade. The
SE-3 has yet to lose lock on any station, period.

Mike mac here... hint: im sending back a new Orion, I bought it 2 weeks ago
for the BUDster but it turns out it's to intuitive for him to operate, bud
has rejected the computer era.. the thinking was I knew he wanted one [
Orion ] and at 85 and knowing what I know about him, I thought he deserved
some fun, and then I would own it again, but as I said it just wont work
for him, everything that could , did go wrong , hospital visits for his wife
blah blah.. anyhow my point is , I KNOW that set will sell for 5% less than
a brand brand new one and will be in stock..
As well ?Scott has been very helpful.. he's the sales manager , I have also
ordered and should be getting the new receiver in about a week or so the
RX-340.. and all along that has been for me.. so I am real sure it will stay
here.. but back to the Orion, when Bud sort of gave up on it, I set it up
here and also downloaded Ham Radio Deluxe, WOW that really opens up the
Orion and all it's features. and it's free so I never got to n4py's at
$80.00 program..
so I enjoyed the Orion, but if it was not working for bud, I just thought
I'd wait till later , and keep jacking along with the Harris and Collins as
well my trusty old 781/Signal One combo.. but I do have the Orion packed
and in the truck to ship Monday.. and it will be available with the 5%
discount, so you can at least ask about it.. just my 2 cents worth..
