Glenn,
I have had a Ten-Tec Corsair for 10 Yrs. It has a 500 Hz CW filter.
I only work CW. When Dave, K4SV, in Ashvelle, NC who goes on
a lot of DXpeditions found out I did not have a rig that worked true
split, he just up and sent me his DSP IF TS-870. The TS-870 had
the upgrade DSP chips in it that the TS-870S has. He sent me the
TS-870 to use as long as I wanted - said it just collecting dust. He
had got an IC-756 Pro II.
The TS-870 does not have a manual notch filter so noise gets in
the IF's where the DSP takes place. In many cases I cannot go
below a 600 Hz DSP filter setting as the noise masks the signal.
I live in an older part of town, and I am surrounded by miles of
some of the oldest power distribution lines. Duke Power has been
really good about eliminating past power line noise that rendered
30 and 40M useless, but my average noise level usually runs an S3
on 20M and below.
So....my ole Ten Tec Corsair will run circles around the TS-870
in both noise immunity and sensitivity !!! So.....I have always wanted
an Omni Six Plus since they came out, but could not afford one. Lots
of faithful Ten-Tec fans are trading their Omni Six Plus for the Orion.
So....I got a used Omni Six Plus from Ten-Tec with CW filters and
fully checked out. Still in the box as my mother became very ill and
had to go to nursing home. I am waist deep in her legal and financial
affairs, but as soon as I can see some light, the Omni will come out
of the box.
Lots of rigs like the TS-920 and TS-570D have optional 500 Hz CW
filters, but they are ceramic and not XTAL. These ceramic filters
ring with noise but a XTAL filter will not. Ten-Tec still uses XTAL
filters, and you will never find another rig that will beat the Ten-Tec
QSK. The TS-870 has QSK, but it is relay operated, very loud, and
annoying.
So.....you just really can't beat a Ten-Tec rig !!!

Hi Fred,
It's almost impossible to get the rid of the Ten Tec bug once you are
infected. Many have tried but they usually come back. I am not talking
about
the
Amateurs who listen to all of the Ten Tec bashing on 75 meters, then
order a
TT
rig for a free 30 day evaluation, only to get their money back and then
go
to
Eham product review to give the TT rig a ZERO rating. No, I am not
talking
about
these mindless morons. Let them enjoy mediocrity; this is what they
deserve.
" WATCH THE CLOUDS FLOAT BY, I'll make the Q's..."
I am talking about Amateurs of sound mind who have spent years ENJOYING
one
TT rig or another, then decide to try one of the new JA whiz, bang,
light-show
rigs. Most of these fellows, in my experience, do come back and wonder
why
they ever left. Others may have different stories.
I have been a Ten Tec fan since I was a snotty nosed high school kid who
could not afford the Drakes, Collins or even the Swans. My PM-3 and
80-40
meter
doublet gave me plenty of long hours of Ten Tec fun.
Years later and now that I can afford which ever rig or rig's I desire,
I
purchase only rigs made in Tennessee. In fact my Ten Tec bug has reached
the
terminal stage. I have over 60 pieces of Ten Tec gear and can't stand to
part with
any of them.
Does any know if there is a 12 step recovery program for Ten
Tec-aholics???
Maybe, Ten Tec Anonymous??? Not that I would ever go but surely, I am,"
NOT
ALONE..."
You might check with Ten Tec Sales. I am sure they can fix you up with
an
Omni 6 or 6+ in very good condition and for a reasonable price. The Omni
6
series
are great rigs and will give you performance that you will enjoy for
years
to
come.. IMHO...

Glenn WA4AOS
