Brad,
I can't comment on the first two problems, but haven't observed them.
On the last point, both receivers are of comparable sensitivity, and
have a low enough noise floor to be able to hear the same signals. The
real difference will be when there are strong signals close by. You
could simulate that if you have a signal generator, or a seperate
transmitter VFO that you can inject into the receiver, say 2 kHz away
from the weak signal. Crank it up until the MP has problems and then
switch to the Orion with the 1 kHz roofing filter and I think that you
will hear a difference. If you have two sources and can separate them at
2 and 4 kHz, you can do a near-in 3OIMD test and should really see a
difference.
Even an S-38 can hear if there's no one else around!
GL and enjoy in the next contest or pile-up!

I have tuned in to several very weak signals (in the noise floor) and have gone from an AGC of med, to fast to prog and can hear absolutely no difference. Am I missing something? Or is it just so subtle that you can't tell the difference?
