That fact that one person from an ethnic group does not find some slang
reference offensive does not mean that it isn't. My step-son is
Japanese-American - his grandparents were interned during WWII - I also know
other people with similar histories. I can guarantee you that many persons
of Japanese decent would not find the term "Jap" funny.
And maybe Grant, as you say, it is just Americans, or even, just me who is
unduly sensitive to words. But I can tell you, at dinner with the
Japanese-Americans I know, I just would not make references to "Jap"
computers, radios, cars or whatever - I know it would not be treated as this
love-fest of mere acknowledgment of differences that you suggest.
But what I don't understand, is that you, Grant, are advocating this
"celebration of differences" - well....except one....our difference - you
feel the term "Jap" and "rice box" celebrate differences, I don't. So why,
instead of "celebrating" that difference, do you get offended? Tom W6EIJ
