I also though Ten Tec sold heavily into the commercial and DOD markets.
There just is not enough business in amateur radio to support most
companies.  The two major firms in amateur radio are HRO and MFJ.  Both are
very small businesses.

The comment about staying lean and only hiring as needed makes good sense.
The founders
were involved in businesses that spread into amateur radio (Electro Voice
and RME) so they knew what was needed and the potential pitfalls.  But they
also had extensive commercial and DOD contacts, too.
