Hi Shawn,
There is a spur on about 14.333 Mhz on my Scout but about S2
on the meter. It does drive me nuts when I'm on the County
Hunter's Net on 14.336 Mhz. An easy way to eliminate it when
using this range of frequencies is to switch the speed/Off/RIT
switch to speed. This changes the counter frequency and
eliminates the spur. Now you give up the frequency readout so if
you need to change frequency you will have to go to OFF to get a
reading. It also eliminates the VFO lock but if yours is as
stable as mine after a 30 minute warm-up you will see very little
drift. I have monitored the CHN all day without touching the knob
after the 30 minute warm-up.
I have had SWR problems with the three magnet mount also and
RF feedback. I can tune the antenna for 1.2:1 on 10 & 15 meters
but on 20 and up I can't get it down below about 5:1. I think the
reason is the coax shield ends at the magnet frame and doesn't
really go to the chassis ground. There is some capacity coupling
through the magnets that is enough for 10 & 15 but not 20 and up.
You might help it if you add a wire from the magnet mount to the
car body but it didn't help me. But then you solved it with the
1/4 wave counterpoise. IE not a good RF ground with the magnet
mount.
The solution for me was the, old fashioned and not used much
anymore, ball type body mount. No problem with getting a match
with this as shield goes to body ground at the base of the mount.
However the wife won't let me do it (body mount) on the new car.
Guess I'll have to wait till it's 10 or so years old.
