Congrats on getting your new license! Hope you have many years of good
hamming ahead.
Hopefully you did not let ALL the smoke out of your keyer. They often have
a reverse polarity protection diode in parallel with the output transistor to
protect against such things, but if not you probably only killed the output
switching transistor.
You can successfully interface positive only keyers to grid block equipment
with an adaptor. See:
