[TenTec] SCOUT ON CW?

Hello to the list...
I am the new owner of a Scout 555. I have been using it on CW ('love that
QSK), but I was surprised to see how the IF BW control worked. I was
expecting something that would narrow up the bandwidth of the IF, and allow
me to tune the desired CW signal into the center of the bandpass with the
RIT control. But what I'm seeing is the IF BW control acts more like an
adjustable Low Pass audio filter. As I narrow the "IF Bandwidth", I have to
retune the desired signal to a lower frequency making it harder to hear.
With the IF BW control full counterclockwise, the desired signal is
strongest at nearly ZERO Hertz audio frequency... not very useful.
Am I using the wrong procedure, or is it supposed to operate like that? (I
don't have a manual yet, so I can't look for the answer in there.)
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks & 73.
