I have followed this thread with interest, as most of the overly technical
(to those who don't do it everyday) to'ing and fro'ing is essentially
correct.
As far as a newbie rig, without PC interface, an older Omni C is a good bet
as it is forgiving and I have used many over the past umpteen (39 actually)
years as a ham who is mostly an operator but also has "PE" and "PhD" on his
business card to use with a buck (or a pound sterling) to buy a coffee.
The Jupiter is a good platform to experiment on, not a contester's rig by
any means, but fun to play with.
My favorite is my Omni 6, next is my Omni C D series, and a last choice is
the Paragon.
But, if I was just starting out, I would get a rig that gives me a chance to
PLAY....and the Jupiter is the right choice.
BTW, my 160m (the only band) antenna is fed with LDF5 and I tune it from the
shack.....even at 10 to 1 it beats a 1 to 1 piece of 213 or RG8.....and I
can tune it from 1.8 to 28 MHz and talk to someone, occasionally breaking a
pile up in the VHF bands above 160m.
Anyway, mileage may vary, but a radio that let's you do what you want to do
is the one you want. If you want to tweak the software, a Jupiter is your
baby, if you want DXCC on the low bands, get an Omni 6, if you want to key
click on CW and piss everybody off, get a Yaesu.
That my two pence (English money) worth.
