[TenTec] Ten-Tec design issues and costs

Nice orange screens are normal on Japanese gear which sells for relatively
little. That pea-green screen on the Jupiter, and having to have a separate
dial to punch in numbers - Help. It is a shame.

The Jupiter will stay - it has its own price niche.

The Orion will be great, from what I know, but the logic defies me at times.
Like, what about fans inside? "They get dirt in". Well, surprise, my
computer has three fans just to keep the chips cool, and it is clean as the
driven snow inside.

I am a CW guy. Ten-Tec is superb in that department, or close to it. Have
heard some gripes about the Jupiter signal. But, for high speed QSK, Ten-Tec
is still the champ. I just don't understand their designs - problematical,
IMO. So are the prices. I'd like to buy American, but not to put up with
inferior basic features and ugly looks just to get a slight QSK improvement.

They do have one good policy - long term service support. But I don't view
the service dept. as the friend I want. I don't WANT to find them great - I
don't want to keep shipping the rigs back and forth as I did with my Omnis.
No way. At this stage, sadly, my Jap gear will have to do. The coin banks
don't have enough in them now to buy a rig and go pick it up in person. That
was a pipedream. I've been there when they were booming and after they went
independent. I think the latter did them in. Too much of a coincidence...

Hi Dave... I received an email from someone at Ten-Tec who didn't give
me the asked-for permission to quote him/her... and their numbers for
the costs to do color were large enough that I have to take it all back.
It was not a 4 digit figure, but still a ** LOT ** of bucks. At that
price difference, I understand, and concede. I still say that,
marketing-wise, it's gonna hurt 'em. It's unfortunate that to do it
would be so costly.

P.S. I would have posted this sooner, but was waiting for the
quote-permission that didn't come.
